Clean Your Pool Tiles While Taking A Dip
Unfortunately, cleaning your pool tiles is one of those dirty, yet necessary jobs that come with pool ownership; stained tiles can put you off diving into an otherwise clear pool. After months of pool use, tiles start to show the build-up of calcium deposits, algae or other contaminants. These generally present as a whitish haze or a dark green ring on the surface of the Tile.
If you do not want to folk out the big bucks on a pool maintenance crew, we have a few tactics to make cleaning your pool tiles an easy affair that doesn’t hurt the back pocket.
What is building up on your tiles?
As time passes, tiles are subjected to stains building up on the surface. Usually, staining occurs due to a chemical imbalance or as a result of material such as soil and leaves clinging on to the surface of the tiles for an extended period.
When the water in a pool naturally evaporates, calcium deposits can attach to the sides, leaving white-grey coloured calcium staining, which can be challenging to remove. Usually, there are two types of scaling you may find on your pool tiles:
- Calcium Carbonate
- Calcium Silicate
If you have calcium scaling on your pool tiles, you will see the surface of the tiles affected with a flaky white crust. The latter of the two can be one of the more difficult types of scaling to remove.
One of the other reasons for the build-up of scum and staining on pool tiles is the pesky reoccurring problem of sunscreens and lotions. The residues of these products come off the body and head straight toward the tiles edging your pool. This causes the tiles to attract everything else in the pool; making it easier for more algae, mould, mildew and scum to grow.
Time to clean your pool tiles
Depending on the type of scaling or stain, as well as how long it has been building up for, with the right products and instruction, cleaning tiles doesn’t have to be too tricky.
Firstly, you will need to remove any organic debris or materials that have built up on the surface such as leaves, soil or grass clippings. This can be done by hand or with the assistance of a pool vacuum.
In cases where the dirt and grime are very minimal, a soft bristle brush may do the trick. For sturdier stains or calcium scaling, you will need to clean the affected area with a proper tile cleaning product. Avoid using homemade cleaners made with baking soda and vinegar, toothpaste or even dish soap as these products will affect the pH balance of your pool. Try to steer clear of acid-based cleaners as they can be damaging to the surface of the Tile and put your health at risk.
